On March 9, 1997, Christopher Wallace, a.k.a Biggie Smalls, a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G., was shot to death at a stoplight in Los Angeles. The murder was thought to be the culmination of an ongoing feud between rap music artists from the East and West coasts, but the case remains unsolved.

B.I.G. gained commercial success following the release of his 1994 album "Ready to Die" which went quadruple-platinum, launching Bad Boy Records and revitalizing East Coast hip-hop during a time when West Coast rap dominated the rap scene.

His second album, prophetically titled "Life After Death," was released posthumously on March 25, 1997 and is credited as one of the best-selling rap albums of all time.
